As summer approaches, the rising temperatures bring new challenges, especially when it comes to caring for your baby’s delicate skin. Babies’ skin is incredibly sensitive, and the heat can lead to irritation, dryness, and even sunburn if not protected properly. As a midwife and a mum of 4, I’m here to share expert advice on keeping your little one’s skin safe and comfortable through the hotter months.
summer skincare concerns for babies
heat rash
Heat rash appears as a red, bumpy rash, typically in areas that trap sweat, like under clothing or in the nappy area. Babies are particularly susceptible to heat rash as they’re unable to regulate their body temperature like adults. To prevent heat rash, dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing and avoid overdressing. Cool baths can also help keep their skin comfortable and prevent irritation.
sunburn
Providing proper sun protection for your little one is vital as even short exposure to the sun can cause redness and discomfort. When choosing a sunscreen it’s wise to choose a baby-safe option that avoids harsh chemicals. And, of course, keep your baby in the shade or under a sun hat whenever possible.
dry skin & eczema
Hot weather can exacerbate dry skin and eczema - one thing I know all too well with my two middle kids. Products like b.box body protect will aid in soothing and protecting their skin when flare ups occur.
building a summer skincare routine for babies
bathing
During the summer, it can help to bathe your baby more frequently, perhaps daily or every other day, to keep their skin cool and free of sweat build-up. I recommend b.box body cleanse. It’s formulated with nourishing ingredients and calming essential oils leaving their skin feeling soft without stripping away natural oils, helping maintain a healthy moisture balance.
hydration
Keeping your baby’s skin hydrated is essential in the summer months to prevent dryness and irritation. To keep our kids skin hydrated we use b.box body hydrate, a lightweight, everyday lotion that is a true powerhouse for summer skincare. With hydrating ingredients like Kakadu plum, aloe vera, and shea butter and calming botanicals, including calendula and Roman chamomile, make it especially gentle on hydrating for sensitive skin.
protecting baby’s skin from rashes
During summer, the combination of heat and moisture in the nappy area can increase the risk of nappy rash. I can always rely on b.box body protect to soothe nappy rash and irritation during summer months. It’s formulated with zinc oxide to support the skin's protective barrier and Kakadu plum, lavender, and chamomile for anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, the convenient airless jar with a single-handed pump, makes application easy and mess free.
Summer skincare for babies requires gentle, effective products and a mindful routine to keep their skin comfortable and healthy. By using the right products and adopting a few preventative measures, you can help your baby enjoy the warmer months.
