May 07, 2024
Mother's Day is just around the corner! While flowers and chocolates are always appreciated, there's something extraordinary about a gift made with love.
At b.box, we know that mums cherish anything their little Picassos create. A homemade card crafted by those tiny hands is more than paper and glue; it's a sentimental keepsake that expresses a child's love in a way no store-bought present can.
kids taking the lead
Involving your kids in creating a Mother's Day card is not just about the gift itself. It's about creating a bonding experience filled with laughter and messy (but oh-so-adorable!) creativity. It's an opportunity for your child to explore their artistic side and uniquely express their love for Mum.
Imagine the look on Mum's face when she receives a card decorated with colourful scribbles, a fingerprint bouquet of "flowers," or glittery hearts. These handmade masterpieces will indeed become keepsakes she'll cherish for years.

We've got you covered! Read on for b.box's 3 homemade cards perfect for little hands to make. Let the creativity flow as your child decorates their masterpiece for Mum.
card 1: little finger bouquet
materials needed:
- A4 size sheet of construction paper (any colour your child desires)
- Colourful washable paints (at least 3-4 colours)
- Shallow dish or tray (one for each paint colour)
- Baby wipes or paper towels
- Textas, pencils or crayons for final touches
instructions:
1. fold the A4 paper: Fold the A4 sheet neatly in half to create a simple card.
2. prepare the paint trays: Pour small amounts of each paint colour into separate trays. Adults might want to step in for less mess!
3. create the flowers - the fun part: Using one finger at a time, let your child gently press their fingerprint onto one of the paint trays, covering their fingerprint completely.
4. stamp the card: Carefully press the fingerprint onto the folded paper in the centre. This will form the centre of the flower! Next, stamp fingerprints of different colours around the centre fingerprint to create the flower petals
5. repeat: Repeat steps 3 and 4 with different paint colours to create a vibrant flower bouquet.
6. clean up: After each paint colour, clean your child's finger with a baby wipe or damp paper towel to avoid mixing colours
7. let it dry: Let the paint dry, and then add your finishing touches and message.
card 2: i love you a handful
materials needed:
- A4 size sheet of construction paper (any colour your child desires)
- Colourful washable paints (at least 3-4 colours)
- Scissors (for adult use)
- Glue stick
- Textas, pencils or crayons for final touches
- Baby wipes or paper towel
instructions:
1. fold the A4 paper: Fold the A4 sheet neatly in half to create a simple card.
2. prepare the paint: Pour a small amount into a shallow dish or tray
3. make the handprint:
a. apply paint: Help your child spread paint onto their hand, including the palm, fingers and thumb, with a paintbrush
b. press onto paper: Grab a new A4 sheet that is a contrasting colour to the folder sheet, and guide your child to press their painted hand firmly on this A4 sheet.
c. clean up: Clean your child's hand with a baby wipe or damp paper towel.
Alternatively, you can trace around your child’s hand onto the new piece of paper and cut out.
4. clean up: Clean your child's hand with a baby wipe or damp paper towel.
5. cut out the print: Once the paint dries, an adult can use scissors to cut out the handprint shape carefully.
6. write the five reasons you love mum: As there are five fingers, write five reasons you love mum on each fingerprint (as seen in the image above) and say I love you in a handful of ways
7. attach the print: Use the glue stick to spread glue at the back of the print and stick it on the folded card. Make sure the glue has dried before adding your final touches and message.
card 3: paper flowers
materials needed:
- A4 size sheets of construction paper (any colour your child desires)
- Scissors (for adult use)
- Glue stick
- Textas, pencils or crayons for final touches
- Buttons or sequins
instructions:
1. fold the A4 paper: Fold the A4 sheet neatly in half to create a simple card.
2. prepare the paper flowers: Draw your desired flower on a separate A4 sheet and have an adult carefully cut out the flower shape.
3. make the flowers: Use glue to stick sequins or buttons to the centre of the flower.
For an extra touch: You can stick a couple of flower cut outs over the top of each other to create a layered flower!
4. attach the flower: Use the glue stick again to stick the finished product to the front of the card. Make sure to allow the glue to dry before adding your final touches and message
